some of the smartest people don't go in for teaching and conversely there are some really dumb people who are teaching okay I'm sorry it's the truth so gloves are off again is it worth going abroad for higher studies after 12 standard or after graduation like for example to the US UK Canada Australia Europe very interesting question yeah so in fact this is I mean last episode we talked about how to choose an engineering college on a branch after 12th so this is a mini series kind of on higher education this is a continuation as we said last time this might not be applicable to all of uh you but there is somebody definitely who you know who this will be applicable
to forward a link to them and after a few episodes we will get back to our usual programming of talking about things that are applicable to pretty much every scheduled programming will return shortly so is it worth it right it boils down to the question what do you mean by worth it right are you asking in terms of quality of Education or are you asking in terms of Roi sometimes he asks my question so I don't even have to ask I just have to nod so the answer differs you get the idea right for those subjects I am pretty sure that the quality of Education abroad in developed countries is much better than in India okay whether it is
worth it financially or not uh depends on the situation depends on the number of things and we will discuss uh all of this in detail in the rest of the episode okay and I think a lot of discussions about going abroad will pertain to colleges in the U.S because that is usually the number one destination for most true diversity in general uh we will talk about all of that okay so let's start with quality of Education okay uh why do I say education there is better right first thing you have to understand is that Indian education system has a lot of problems okay yeah there is most places have bad teaching methods right there is like a board which
decides the syllabus which is often out of date the evaluation methods are like painful uh focused more on memorization rather than application on Concepts and various other problems right yeah we've spoken about this intermittently in a couple of our episodes but not to this extent where yeah Naveen is doing right now which are salaries are low yeah okay we don't pay our teachers well and as a result uh some of the smartest people don't go in for teaching and conversely there are some really dumb people who are teaching okay I'm sorry it's the truth so gloves are off again I am if you're going to comment on that particular statement please take a moment to think
about what that makes you in this context no let me let me say right I'm not saying all teachers are dumb yeah there are some really great teachers every college has one or two that the students are going to remember for the rest of their lives and they've actually changed the lives of students did but the problem is that good teachers are an exception yeah and not the rule it is and these are people who have chosen to sacrifice their lifestyle so that they can serve you and I think that's just a sad yeah it is because they shouldn't have to sacrifice their life and lifestyle to choose you to choose to serve you I mean we should be teacher
paying teachers more than we pay top CEOs I mean the only thing we pay teachers is lip service Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu gurudeva maheshwara the other problems with Indian colleges are that the budgets are low not just for teacher salaries but for other things also so in general uh except for a few colleges the infrastructure uh is bad right like labs and so on and the fourth problem is that in general we are pretty low on Research this yes just comes straight from the fact that both the Indian government spends Less on Research than most developed countries and even China and Indian companies spend less on Research than corresponding companies in developed countries right so for all of these
things Indian colleges are college education is just not as good as it is abroad it is so fascinating that people will uh praise things like ISRO and all of our achievements in that space yeah but when it comes time to fund ISRO ISRO doesn't really get too much funding absolutely and uh you know a lot of people and I know some people are going to react to this by saying oh we have such great colleges and iits are producing the best uh people in the world and so on keep in mind that if the top 2000 people in a country of 1.4 billion go to a college right even if you just keep throw stones
at them for four years some of them will turn out to be great right so we should worry about the fact that the other thing to worry about is 2000 and 1.5 billion is it's it's it's an incongruent ratio please I mean we get great output from our iits in spite of the bureaucracy there not because of how they're doing great things yeah in spite is a very important key word there it's not just about the education okay because when you go abroad you get exposure to a different culture that's true I think that is also extremely important right that's true when you get exposed to a different culture that is the real only time when you really
understand the flaws in our own culture right otherwise it's like a fish doesn't know it is inside water out so only when you take it out of the water you realize the good and bad properties of water yes um and when you realize that it gives you the ability to pick the best from both worlds right I am not saying that our culture is bad and their culture is good right place of indoor culture War please it's not a cultural War there are lots of good things about our culture but there are lots of bad things also and similarly with their cultures but as somebody with legs in both cultures you can pick the best of both and be better
than both right that's a big advantage that's that's the whole thing um and finally going abroad does have resume a value right 20 years after you finish your education having the name of a top uh U.S college like Wisconsin for example or IIT for example or both for example yeah does continue to make a difference right it does open doors for you which would otherwise not open as easily okay so yeah the the advantage of having into of getting to experience a new culture the advantage of getting a nice name on your resume like that and of course also the fact that the network you get from that college right there will be students from all over the world
in that college and they will go back to all over the world and you will have access to that Network for the rest of your life and if you want to know the importance of networking we spoke shortly about it in the previous video also where we spoke about how to choose a engineering college and we have to do a full episode on the importance of networking and how most people don't do it well and how to do it well but Naveen what this brings to mind is that not everyone will be able to do it I do agree that going abroad and studying abroad definitely has advantages but not everyone can afford it yeah yeah that is the second part
right is there a return on investment yeah the fact remains that uh studying abroad is extremely expensive okay yeah if you can afford it I say definitely go for it okay especially for stem okay if you cannot afford it if you need to take a loan I would say it is not worth it don't do it okay there I mean there are people who think I'll take a loan I'll study and then work there for so many years and there will be uh you know I can pay back the loan there is no guarantee right visa rules can change already visa rules in the US are currently quite bad you might not be able Anything Can Happen suddenly there
is like a pandemic and three years you are not able to work there anything can happen I would say it's not a good idea but um if you are going after uh graduation right for a Masters or a PhD in a stem area then keep in mind that most top colleges you will be able to get a assistantship of some sort or a scholarship or something which significantly reduces the cost and also because the duration is much less right you could finish in two years one and a half years some are even possible in one year so the finances situation might not be as bad and plus specifically talking about the US even if you don't get a
work visa you get to study the I mean you get to work there as uh practical training for three years and that might be enough so far um you know postgraduate studies I say high chance that you should try to go uh even if you don't get a scholarship right away if it's a top college then you will get one after the first semester uh but situation is different after 12th standard right the chances of scholarship are lower the period is much longer minimum four years typically uh right so um if your parents can afford it go for it otherwise you're better off considering studying in India for undergraduate and going abroad later but what would you recommend go after 12th
or go after finishing your bachelor's here if you can afford it go after 12th okay uh one complaint I usually hear is that oh children are not mature at that stage and they will get uh bad habits and things like that I have news for you okay you should see what goes on in Indian colleges they can get bad habits there much more easily right it's cheaper so even for bad habits okay so that is not going to help you so the best you can do is that in the first 17 years of the life of your children give them a good upbringing so that you don't need to police them because you can't police them yeah at age 15
something happens and you know the entire policing thing goes out of the window yeah because I I was one of those 15 16 17 year old kids but then iits in India they are better than all of these colleges or most of these colleges abroad maybe in terms of just like the studies right but they do suffer from a lot of the problems we talked about earlier right right in terms of the research opportunities not being that good the industry connects not being that good and there is still a lot of bureaucracy in iits right so the top colleges in the US would still be better than the iits uh for all round education right the
other problem is that okay fine maybe the top iits are better than most of the top colleges in the US but they are also more difficult to get in right it's probably easier to get into Stanford than IIT Bombay oh shade Stanford but yeah he is right definitely um sorry all right uh visas right visas how how what visas what what do you do about Visa different questions related to Visa right yeah one is that as a student are you going to get a student visa yeah right that I think just boils down to your finances if you have the money uh it's fairly easy to get student visas it is not very common for student visas to
get rejected the usual reason for rejection is if they can see clearly that you don't have the money for this degree and you're just sort of cobbled together some money for it uh and then they see you as an immigration danger most people I mean for those kind of people or any way I'm advising don't go right so student visa is not the problem but visas for working there after the degree that can be an issue right in stem Fields say 10 years ago I would have said definitely go to the US the Visas get taken care of but that situation is no longer true some people are trying to fix it we don't know there are various issues with
visas but situation is better in say Canada and places like that so the Visa situation keeps changing do your own research unfortunately but also keep in mind that in the U.S uh for stem degrees you get to do up to three years of practical training maybe that is good enough to both get experience and earn some money and it will have value when you come back interesting points I have two more questions yeah one of them is what happens to those of us who cannot afford going to the U.S are we doomed okay very important point you know going abroad to a good college is just to increase your chances slightly of doing that right in life you don't go doesn't
mean that you're doomed right it just means that you have to work a little hard order that's all right um I mean forget top colleges in India right people from terrible colleges go on to do extremely well in life it just me I mean this generation is very lucky that the best education in the world is available for free or for just like a small amount of money on the internet all you need is the discipline to use it right I mean there is no scarcity of knowledge on the internet so this capacity is the will to learn right so as long as you can generate that you will do fine and my other question is
there are a lot of Consultants out there who promise that they'll get you into a college abroad so one thing I would like you to be careful of is that a lot of these Consultants are getting paid by colleges a commission for getting you to join that college okay okay um so unless you are extremely extremely careful uh it is quite possible that the consultant is does not have your best interests in mind they are just trying to get you into a college where they get a commission and you pay the fees so be careful I have one more additional bonus question to ask uh the uh the process you spoke about selecting colleges after
12th in India engineering colleges after 12th in India can that similar kind of process be used for selecting colleges abroad absolutely right uh I suggest you watch the full episode but the short answer is that go to the best top ranked College you can don't worry about the branch or subject you are going to learn that takes care of itself sounds very counterintuitive but check out the video and you'll know why he's saying that there is ample explanation in the video itself but for now this is mishrikanth that's Naveen this is future IQ thank you thank you for watching till the end if you like this episode check out these others you might like them also and
please share with your friends I'm sure they will also like this thank you
