Description

What is IQ and can IQ be increased? IQ or Intelligent Quotient score tests one's performance in various tests. The IQ test or score is designed in a way that the average person will have an IQ of 100, what do the higher or lower IQ values mean? Can IQ determine the success? Is IQ inheritable, can you increase the IQ? What are the factors that affect IQ and success? The answers to all these questions lie in the IQ scores and their interpretations. Let's understand that in this video.

the concept of IQ is highly misunderstood okay does high IQ mean you'll be successful does it mean you will be rich can you increase your IQ right are children of smart people always smart are children of dumb people always dumb the answers to all of these questions are no okay okay but stick around until we give the explanation of how all of this works and how IQ interns with all of this success and we are going to talk about IQ on future IQ today very interesting but uh let's start with the question that fascinated me the most the question about smart parents and smart children are you saying smart parents can't have Smart children or don't have Smart children
well and an average smart parents children are likely to be smarter but there is no guarantee okay there is a good chance they can be Dumber okay one third of the time the child will actually have IQ 15 points less than the parents right so you can think of it as if parents IQ is here the children will be distributed on either side okay that's an argument for having a lot of children but not necessarily a good argument go on the point is that IQ is strongly genetic but not strongly heritable uh gen what so what it means is that your genes pretty much decide what IQ you will have but what genes you're getting
from your parent there is no guarantee the problem is that there are around 500 different genes or more that are involved in deciding your IQ right yeah now from one parent you're going to get only half of those 500 the other half is coming from the other parent now even if both parents are very smart this combination of half of half jeans might not work very well right because that's like taking half the recipe of a lakn Biryani and half the recipe of V Haka noodles and then saying oh well let's make this dish right there's a chance it might be amazing but the there a chance it might be horrible another problem is reversion to mean okay what it means is
that lnav Biryani is already such a good dish that making any changes to it is more likely going to screw it up than to improve on it right so after three four sets of changes it just becomes some average pull out for the same reason three four generations later Einstein's descendants are not Einstein's yeah and and if you look at it uh there is a 50% chance of inheriting Einstein's genes at every gen at the first generation the Next Generation that's 50% of 50% and so on so forth and the fourth generation down you only have a 6% chance 6.25% chance which is yeah very low so yeah uh but you mentioned something about a 15
point gap between the parent and child 15 points of IQ why 15 specifically the reason I picked 15 is because 15 has a special significance in IQ okay IQ is normally distributed amongst the humans right it's like a bell curve yeah and the exact middle of this bell curve is 100 is 100 it's by definition IQ points are given so that the average person will have an IQ of 100 correct plus the IQ points are spread out in such a way that 15 is one standard deviation okay what that means is that half the people in the world will have IQ above 100 only 16% of the people in the world will have an IQ of
115 only 2% of people in the world will have an IQ above 130 okay only 1% will have an IQ above 135 and. 1% above 147 okay and this is true always that's how IQ is defined okay so it's not like it's going to change over time okay so but keep in mind that IQ over 130 is pretty rare so what you're saying is that the IQ scale this normal curve is a fixed curve and of humanity all the population of humanity fixed is fit into this area and as more people get added they get get segmented accordingly according to these percentages that you just mentioned so I think what you're saying is that as new people are born they will
be distributed with the same distribution so as if population doubles it'll still be 0.1% above 147 population becomes half it'll still be 0.1 above 147 yeah yeah yeah uh but then you said that high IQ doesn't correlate with success or wealth that's what you said in the beginning I said that high IQ doesn't guarantee success and high IQ doesn't guarantee wealth okay yeah okay it is correlated okay but to understand this uh let's understand how IQ works okay okay IQ there are five important layers of IQ okay 5% of the world has a like Cube below 75 okay okay now these people these 5% of people are such that they can do some simple addition and subtraction they
cannot do multiplication they can do simple manual labor jobs right so for example in farms Agriculture and all that construction what not construction is more difficult it is more tricky right because you have to remember a whole bunch of things and you have to do things in a certain sequence that they cannot handle right in general these people have different difficulty holding down jobs especially in cities in villages their life is a little easier they have a 20% higher chance of dying early this is people under the IQ of 75 and in the US and many other places probably in India they can't join the Army because they don't clear the minimum things right these are
people who can't delay ratification if they want something they want it now so they will usually not have any savings they will not be able to hold down most jobs and so on yeah people under the Q of 75 are not the kind of people you are thinking second layer is IQ of 75 to 90 right they can do some multiplication and division okay they can't do complex math these are these are still under average intelligence is what you're saying 90 100 is average this 70 to 90 this is the 20% layer just about the 5% bottom layer right um these people if they're given a checklist they can use the checklist have you done this this
this yes I have done this this this but they can't keep it all in their head right so simple jobs based on checklists they can do if they're given a checklist and told by the end of the day you have to take off all these items they're able to do but they're harder to train especially on things that require complex sequences and so on right uh if they are given the job of driving they will have twice as many accidents as other people okay so this is the situation with the the 20% between 75 and 90 okay so you can imagine the kind of jobs they can do and the kind of money they will earn then the IQ range
from 90 to 110 okay 50% of the World falls in this range right they understand basic science right that was taught in school but with big gaps they can still have major misconceptions okay they can do semiskilled knowledge uh jobs like using basic computers and all that they can do more skilled manual uh labor so they can hold down jobs but not very complex jobs right so this is the average person all over the world between an IQ of 90 and 110 50% all right so the next layer up is 110 to 125 IQ okay this is 20% of the world okay these are the people who have around college education or equivalent level of
understanding or skill right they will have a job uh professional job in a company and the job can be non-trivial job they can do it well right they will be middle management they can be teachers not the best teacher but a teacher a teacher right they can do accounts right again not very complex things that the ca does for tax saving but they can follow directions they can copy other accountants basic ideas and so on right the bulk of the people that you and I know and the people watching this episode will be in this category right and then the top layer is the 5% who have an IQ of 125 or above okay these are people who usually will have
post-graduate uh degrees they will reach Senior Management uh even if they don't have a degree they will have enough uh smartness to be able to run and grow their business they will be at the top of whatever they are doing the point I wanted to make is that pretty much all your friends all the people you hang out with right if you're watching this episode you are in one of the top two layers the top 25% yeah right except for a few people that you know come to clean or cook at your place and so on you don't run into anybody from the bottom 75% then if the person who comes to cook at your place has held a job for a long
time without getting fired they are probably in the Amber layer uh right so you know you have no idea what most of the world thinks like right and as a result that's why you don't understand why politics The Works the way it does you don't understand why that person gets elected right because you don't understand how the voters think your brain is not at the same level as them go back and look at how he described the 50% population falling in the IQ of 90 to 110 and now realize that 50% of population equals to how many votes in an election that is why elections are decided the way they are to think about it the problem is that they cannot hold
complex chains of reasoning the reasoning breaks down after one or two steps correct what I didn't say in any of this right is that just because you have high IQ doesn't mean you're going to do all of those things it just is that those are things you can do but there are many things which can prevent you from Reaching Your Potential okay people with 110 plus IQ right they can blow it they can have personality difficulties okay they can have too much self-importance so much self-importance that they don't bother learning they stopped learning at some point right they can have mental health issues they can have alcohol problems right they can get into fights all kinds
of issues which prevent them from being successful or from becoming rich or whatever right so what I strength to get at is if your IQ is low that prevents you from doing certain things if your I IQ is high doesn't mean you're guaranteed that you'll get those things at the beginning you said that IQ cannot be increased but isn't that what schools are for like to increase your IQ no schools cannot increase your IQ right like I said your genes pretty much decide what IQ you're going to have okay but there is a Twist there okay from the age of 0 to 5 your IQ increases rapidly okay from 5 to 18 that's a little bit
more increase after that your IQ stays flat okay so what you can think of is that from the age of 0o to five and a little beyond that you are slowly growing into your potential IQ okay because when you're baby you know nothing the brain doesn't work the way it is supposed to just like your muscles you know that you're are going to have muscles and you're going to walk but you have to learn to do that all of that learning is happening yeah when you're born as a baby you have a certain number of geneses that determine your IQ so you have a clear potential IQ that you can reach and then you're growing into so
but that that potential is also an upper limit right you can't grow Beyond it you can grow up to that limit unless prevented prevented house so the problem is that when you are growing into your IQ certain things like nutrition can prevent your IQ growth nutrition if the is enough iodine in your diet you will grow up to an IQ 12% Less on an average right that is why this whole thing about iodized salt has increased the IQ of the entire world right there are similar research showing that lack of ion or lack of protein in your diet can prevent your brain from reaching its potential IQ similarly pollution is a problem right in another
episode we have covered this but pollution right if there was pollution when your mom was pregnant or when you were a baby that can prevent your IQ from reaching its potential right pollution at the age of two has a clear connection to lower IQ at the age of 10 hold on aren't there different kinds of intelligences because we've been talking about IQ as if it were the only measure for the only kind of intelligent so mod iute tests themselves check for a whole bunch of different things right ability to do maths ability to read and write language logic reasoning memory Visual and spatial uh acurity auditory and musical ability speed all of this is included in the IQ test right okay there
is this guy called Gardner who's written the book multiple intelligences and he talks about these as well as he adds a couple more things so bodily kindes thetic which is people with sports abilities or dancing abilities or interpersonal which is called EQ these days right one of the things that comes out from a lot of research in this areas is that all of these are highly correlated if you're good at one of them there's a good chance that you are good at the others or you can be good at the others unless prevented right so this whole thing is called a g factor I don't want to get into those details too much but to a large extent you will not find
too many people were extremely brilliant at one thing and then dumb at the others right that's not common okay uh kind of I mean uh I have so many questions about IQ that I want to ask you let's do an fq okay there is a popular conception among people understanding among people that different races have different IQ levels or something to that effect a very common argument by racists okay if you do the ual research you do find that there are small differences between different races but if you look at it in more detail you will find that these are because of environmental factors not genetics right for example this particular race a large number of them
grew up poor so they had poorer nutrition and hence their IQ is lower there is research showing that if you adopt kids from poorer countries into a rich country like Sweden those kids grow up with higher average IQ than their original country oh interesting plus this Gap is reducing as the world gets better and flatter and flatter and more connected I'm guessing the same kind of argument also works between genders because there's a common myth that one gender has higher IQ than the other well the story there is more interesting okay okay first of all what you said is right that there is no difference between overall IQ of the two genders right uh average among men and women is more or
less the same but there are differences in the details right we talked about all these multiple intelligences or multiple abilities right so there are certain for which women have higher abilities and certain for which men have lower abilities so for example for verbal and language skills women are better for social skill and understanding uh people a women are better but for spatial skills right understanding space and distances and things like that men have better abilities on an average in understanding hierarchical structure in a company men are better at that right so overall a lot of this seems like the culture that each gender sort of evolved in and therefore acquired that kind of respective intelligence I would not call
it culture right some of it is evolutionary right biologically women had to do better at this and men had to do better at that right I mean men were out uh hunting and Gathering so they needed the special skills men were the ones fighting other men to gain control right so they were the ones who had to understand hierarchies whereas women who are sitting at home and they can't fight so they have to be a little more political so they use their emotional understanding better changing gears into slightly uncomfortable territory you hear arguments about lower IQ people not being allowed to have kids and families of their own yeah so that is the eugenist way of thinking right
popularized in Nazi Germany and also in Liberal democracies about like 8090 years ago okay it's a very wrong way of thinking for a number of reasons okay uh one is that it's a very slippery slope right for example Galton a great scientist right inventor of the concept of correlation yeah he started with the idea of sterilize the disabled then slowly it became sterilized the poor and he invented the word Eugenics right ah basically the problem is one just because somebody's dumb their children can be smart yeah second is that just because somebody has low IQ right now doesn't mean that their genes have low IQ potential it could be that they didn't get the right nutrition when they
were young nutritionally better their children born today in a world that is doing so much better would actually be smarter right so for all these reasons it's like a very dangerous and bad idea so IQ doesn't measure success IQ doesn't guarantee wealth IQ is kind of a measure of intelligence but not exactly because there are multiple intelligences and even in the IQ test you're essentially responding to what you've been trained in school and stuff like that or very interesting IQ is not what you think it is basically low IQ guarantees that you will not do well in life but I IQ doesn't guarantee anything right yeah uh other thing you have to remember is that
if you are a college educated person Hing a professional job and doing reasonably well at it you are very likely to be in the top 25% of the World 100 or above and which also means that you don't understand how the rest of the world most of the world actually thinks one more thing I want you to take away right is that in the long term hard work often beats raw IQ right I mean of course if the IQ is very different the low IQ person won't be able to do many things but when the Gap in IQ is not too large hard workers beat the higher IQ people higher IQ people tend to become
complacent yep so that's your takeaway for this episode of future IQ even if you have high IQ your future will be determined by your hard work not just your IQ this is future IQ sh if you like this episode just like you have misconceptions about IQ very likely you have misconceptions about income in India you have no clue how much money most of India makes you should check out this episode we have done
