Description

Three distinct things explain the overpopulation of India in the 21st century. The population of a country has a lot more to do with geography than any other factor. Let’s analyze the history and geography of our beloved nation to understand the causes of it being overcrowded. Understand what makes India the most populous country in the world.

why is India the most populous country in the world India I thought that was China not anymore this year we overtook them we are number one now oh that's because India is the land of Kamasutra we just love making babies not at all true I mean the whole world enjoys sex okay so that can't be the reason then why is India it has to do with geography so the answer is the Himalayas the awesome Indian Ocean and cows what these three things are the nothing to do with the Himalayas Indian and cows yes so okay I mean if it is not sex that determines the population what do you think determines the population I have
absolutely no idea at this point availability of food okay right if you have enough to feed people then there are more people that's how things were uh until a few hundred years ago true I agree yes so then the question becomes why does India have so much food I mean in fact yes it is true that India is one of the top producers of wheat potatoes rice peas lentils eggplants and you know uh yeah a lot of food India produces and exports a lot of food because I think the climate is very conducive and uh uh the land is very arable what does arable land mean it's fertile it produces a lot of listen this is all from my school
geography days I don't really remember see let us put it in simple terms where the answer has to distinguish India from other countries good idea okay so yeah I mean one is that the climate is good so you know cold places like Canada and Russia have no chance correct second you're right fertile soil that fertility where does fertile soil come from uh from the rivers yes because Rivers bring silt correct right so we have a lot of rivers we will come to that later but also a third thing right planes make it so much easier to do farming you need a big large planes yeah and you can't really Farm on uneven land hilly land and all of that planes
make it easier for farming that is why Africa doesn't count most of Africa doesn't count the plane right uh you'll notice that the North Indian plane in fact if you look at India's population most of of our population is concentrated in that place right point and having such a nice large plane is just random luck right but making that plane fertile is the job of our Rivers which actually is something that I was wondering about yeah why does India have so many rivers and that has to do with the fact that the Indian Ocean is awesome okay because the ocean is slightly warmer what happens is that it warms the air right about it okay and that air rises up
correct along with moisture that it has picked up from the ocean now as soon as air rises it sets up a current because air from here rushes in to replace it and then this air moves towards land and that's how we end up with clouds coming in and that's how we end up with Monsoon you reminding me of my school geography teacher right now yes except that you know you would have gotten much better marks in geography if your teacher had explained it in terms of this is why India's population is high right your teacher didn't do that that's a problem okay okay fine teacher yeah so the point is that we get Monsoon because the Indian Ocean is a
little warmer right what happens fascinating like a couple of degrees warmer than the Atlantic and Pacific and this is how much it impacts actually it is more specific than that okay the west side of the Indian Ocean Arabian Sea and so on is a little warmer and the east side which is closer to Philippines and Australia okay the a little below right and that's why we end up with these two different patches which are slightly different temperature and that's how we end up with a current and that also explains the monsoons that explains the monsoon because there is a temperature difference in summer and that goes away later oh wow I didn't realize the monsoons were a result of the Indian
Ocean being a degree or two more warmer than half of it so that ends up creating something called the Indian Ocean dipole okay wow don't don't worry about it don't need to get we not worry about it but yes the Indian Ocean being warmer how does that contribute to Rivers let's go back to the rivers now yeah so now you know I mean it causes these monsoons when you know you know cherapunji is the wetest place on Earth and all that basically we get insane monsoons and the point is I think cherapunji has recently been displaced by Mosen Ram if I know the name correctly yes GK we're very proud of you shant all of us
here but yeah um the thing is that normally in any other place what would happen is that the clouds would come and the rain would be distributed over a large territory in India what happens is that the clouds come in and they hit the Himalayas sitting right there like a big sry right and uh that prevents the clouds from going further in fact the clouds get pushed up they become cold and then everything falls there and all of them flows down the Himalayas into the North Indian Plains and that's how Rivers happen that's how like not just Rivers massive massive rivers and which are bringing silt from the mountains down wow so let me quickly get this uh
thing clear in my head the Indian Ocean warm therefore air rises air rushes in creates Monsoon clouds the monsoon clouds go all the way to the himalay crash into the Himalaya fall down creates massive Rivers which bring silt down the silt makes the land fertile and it is plain that is important and and the land is plain because Brazil has a much bigger River than us Amazon is like bigger than probably all other rivers combined okay yeah but no planes that's why Brazil doesn't have the population we do why is in the Atlantic or the Pacific warm as well why why is well so that's where the geography comes in right okay because the Arctic North Pole
which is all very cold right and that all that stuff is directly touching the Atlantic and Pacific oh so they are cold why is the Arctic not touching the Indian Ocean directly because the entire think about it there is Africa there is Europe there is Asia and then this is like Philippines they like entire umbrella of land protecting the Indian Ocean from the cold North I I would have never thought geography would be this interesting it gets more interesting think about it right we have this umbrella and there is one break in the umbrella where Philippines and Australia between them there is a gap yeah so cold water from there comes in and it cools up just that part of the
Indian Ocean and that's how we end up with a dipole wow if that part if there wasn't a gap there where likely India's population would be much lower but hold on you mentioned something about cows yes where do cows come into the picture so let's ask this question right that why isn't say America the most populous country right they also have large ples larger than India in fact right and they have a good amount of rivers Mississippi okay yeah problem is cows okay okay so uh I mean before Columbus discovered the American continents right for 10,000 years of farming Europe Asia Africa we had pools to do our farming for us the Americas did not have cows okay in fact Americas
did not have any large domesticable animals and as a result they couldn't do farming as efficiently as we could do for me okay interesting okay I didn't know America didn't have uh cows C for the longest period of time now here is the most amazing part of Geography okay because us is a north south continent whereas Asia is a East West continent think of the following okay uh farming was invented in Iran huh okay then it slowly shifted towards Afghanistan and then India and then Indian continent and then it came to Europe and you know H now here is the thing about farming okay places which are roughly at the same latitude huh have similar climate which
means similar crops can grow and the techniques for farming them will be similar yes when you change the latitude you have to come up with new technology corre because the same tricks don't work yeah so because Asia I mean Asia plus Europe is just one continent I mean we don't have to give the Europeans this much bow so it's called Eurasia technically so Asia is left right right any technique invented somewhere quickly shifts to the left and to the right and that's how farming just all new techniques all new crops all new methods of uh improving the yield per hectare true all of them spread very quickly now imagine you are in America right from
all the way Alaska all the way down to Argentina yeah anything that gets invented somewhere goes a little bit to the left and right and that's itam yeah right if you have to go a little down to Midwest same thing doesn't work you go further down to Texas same thing doesn't work you go further down to Mexico it doesn't work it just and all of this uh further made worse by the fact that they don't have cows okay right so that is why the shape of the continent pretty much decided that they will not be popul and we will be popular you know this puts a very different spin to guy hamari mat absolutely yes but watch this channel
then that part can be fixed yeah but guy will still be yes so what you're saying is warm oceans lots of rivers lots of plain Land is What is necessary to increase the population of a country and cows and East West geography and cows and East West geography but is there no other country in the world except India that has this well so let's take the example of Ukraine okay it has flat planes lovely planes great number of rivers and of course it's in Asia so it has the cows and the East West geography right Ukraine but Ukraine is neither the most populous country nor is it a prosperous country do you know why I was
just going to ask you that why isn't Ukraine the most populous country instead because it's just plain everywhere okay can you tell me what the problem with that is everything spreads out don't know it's it's just think about it this Ukraine sitting here suddenly Changi Khan comes from here attacks them takes away everything they have no natural defenses after a little while they relax and then they start building up their Farms again suddenly the Vikings come from here attack them take everything away you know Vikings Goths Greeks Romans Ottomans Huns just anybody comes and just beats them up and takes stuff away why doesn't that happen to India the mighty Himalayas we are you know protected by ocean from here and
the Himalayas from there geography if Ukraine had Himalayas or something like the Himalayas it would be the most populous country in the world instead uh but because it doesn't it got constantly attacked and constantly robbed of all natural resources etc etc why is China equally populous what is it about China that gives it so much population well I mean if you look at the geography some of those things are there okay it does have large Plains okay it does have natural defenses right the desert and some mountains and so on but you're missing the most important thing the question is wrong China's area is three times the size of India so until China has 4 and a half billion
population you can't ask why is it why isn't it as populous as India because it's technically not as like one third as populous as India okay pretty much geography is Destiny okay or used to be until a few hundred years ago I'm I'm so glad you didn't say geography is history well geography is history also right I keep giving him these ideas and then they backfire on me so I'm 100% sure that one of our next episodes is going to be geography's history well we will do geography's history right we will talk about how things changed in the last 500 years and why suddenly us which had so many dis advantages no cows now its disadvantages have become the
advantages and things like that right but basically what I want to say about today's episode is geography is very important geography is fascinating and simple things like the shape of the continent can determine so many things about uh how the world is made up and how the history why the certain wars happened in certain ways and so on on right okay I wish naven was my geography teacher when I was back in school but uh I he wasn't teaching back then he is teaching now which I'm very glad about uh and if this has piqued your curiosity in geography then you should check out uh another episode related to geography that we recently did which was about
geog guessing fascinating episode and uh one more one more thing oh there is okay you should really be worried about geography because climate change is coming the Arctic is going to melt the polarized caps will melt more cold water coming down that is going to change the Indian Ocean dipole and God knows what that change in geography will do to us and to the different countries of the world so you know better start reading up your geography properly I try to be optimistic and then this guy goes and says things like this Excuse me while I go and get into a depressive spiral Shri Kant naven thank you future IQ
